Fairy doors of evanston, IL - Build community through play

I made these simple doors and business signs, then gave them to local shopkeepers to decorate. A few of these doors were drawn by 2 local middle schoolers, which I then laser cut into wood. I love how the businesses just ran with it and turned them into tiny magical portals. I released 33 doors (and counting) into the neighborhood. Hopefully, they will all be installed in the coming months.

I am also working on an activity book ( I really should be running my business and making money or something lol). I hope to use the book as a fundraising vehicle for local charities and community projects. If you’d like to help me with that, so I can actually get it out there sooner, please reach out.

Find the magic around you.

What is the purpose of all of these tiny doors?

The doors are here to remind us of our own childhood, to help the finder connect with their inner child. All those years when you believed in magic, daydreaming and wondering about all the “what ifs” of the universe. I still want to believe and daydream. This is why I make things and play with colors. Being able to play all day is the best.

I usually notice every child that crosses my path and wonder what they are seeing and thinking. I see them getting dragged here and there on errands, inside the adult world. Sometimes, they are happy and engaged or they look terribly uncomfortable (the grown ups too). This is why I wanted to post these little doors for them and attach them to local businesses. I want them to feel seen and included in the community.

Go out there and find all the magic. Create a scavenger hunt! Draw pictures or write stories about them. Go play!
